365 Days Later: Recovery Lives in the Everyday, Beyond the Headlines

Dear Friends,

There's a LOT going down in the news right now.
A nationwide strike and protest, for one.
For the right to Live A Normal Life.
Standing in solidarity AGAINST violations of humanity
and FOR basic human decency.

Not everyone can do everything,
but we can all do SOMETHING.

YOU can still Show Up and Stay Connected.

Here's How:

One Year Later: The Need for Care, Stability & Opportunity in LA

A year after the Palisades and Altadena fires, recovery is no longer urgent news โ€” but it remains an everyday struggle for many Angelenos.

For students, teachers, and families, rebuilding a year later isnโ€™t just about homes; itโ€™s about daily housing, care, play, learning, and belonging. A year later, safety and stability are still vital for fire victims.

This week, Iโ€™m spotlighting our final four of seven nonprofits doing essential, behind-the-scenes work in 2026 to support young people and community spaces still navigating life after disaster. Iโ€™ve created a short Instagram carousel for each one. I hope youโ€™ll take a moment to explore them and join the fight.

FIRST: PROJECT:CAMP
๐Ÿ‘‰ Help Kids Be Kids Again
Project:Camp provides free, trauma-informed pop-up day camps for young evacuees impacted by disaster. Through play, creativity, and care, they help children feel safe, joyful, and carefree again โ€” while giving parents breathing room during crisis. Healing often begins with play.

NEXT: LA'S BEST AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
๐Ÿ‘‰ Support Safe Afterschool Care
LAโ€™s BEST offers safe, supervised after-school programs for elementary students across LAUSD. Kids receive meals, homework help, and enrichment every school day. For families still recovering from fire-related disruption, these programs provide consistency, nourishment, and peace of mind long after the school bell rings.

THEN: LOS ANGELES ROOM & BOARD
๐Ÿ‘‰ Help Students Stay Housed & Enrolled
LA Room & Board supports displaced and homeless community college students with affordable transitional housing and residential education. After a disaster, housing instability can derail a studentโ€™s future overnight. LARB helps ensure students can stay enrolled, persist, and complete their degrees.

AND: LIBRARY FOUNDATION OF LOS ANGELES
๐Ÿ‘‰ Rebuild Access to Learning
The Library Foundation of LA supports public libraries citywide โ€” funding books, technology, programs, and rebuilding efforts for affected branches. Libraries offer internet access, quiet study spaces, and community connection, especially for students and families without stable housing. Access to learning is a form of recovery.

One Year Later, Healing Looks Like Play, Housing & Learning

These organizations serve different needs, but they share the same purpose: restoring EVERYDAY NORMALCY in the form of safety, stability, and opportunity for LAโ€™s young people, teachers, and communities โ€” one year later and beyond.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Please explore all four carousels, learn more about their impact, and share them forward.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Join our Help Fund Fire Recovery Campaign to sustain this work across care, housing, education, and community spaces.

Help Sustain Long-term Fire Recovery for LAโ€™s Students, Teachers, Libraries & City Colleges.
Thank you for continuing to stand with LA.

With gratitude,
Vanessa
